Tucked into the Surrey Hills on the banks of the River Wey, Godalming is a historic market town full of timber-framed buildings, winding streets and quiet riverside corners. Next door, the village of Farncombe adds its own gentle charm.
The Godalming & Farncombe colouring book from Britain in Lines celebrates the familiar, everyday places that make the two feel like home.
About Godalming and Farncombe
Godalming grew prosperous on the wool and cloth trade, and later as a coaching stop on the road between London and Portsmouth. Its High Street still has many old inns and timber-framed buildings, with the distinctive old town hall, known locally as the Pepperpot, at its heart.
The town also has a surprising claim to fame: in 1881 it became the first town in the world to have a public electricity supply. It's also closely linked to Jack Phillips, the wireless operator on the Titanic, who was born here and is remembered in a peaceful memorial garden by the river.
Godalming and Farncombe landmarks to colour
The Borough Hall
A key civic building for the town, the Borough Hall brings some classic architecture to the collection.
The River Wey
The Wey shapes the character of both Godalming and Farncombe, with towpaths, water meadows and boats making for some of the most relaxing scenes in the book.
Godalming and Farncombe stations
Railway stations are part of everyday life for so many locals, and both stations have their own traditional charm.
St Peter & St Paul Church
Godalming's parish church, with its tall spire rising above the rooftops and the riverside, is one of the town's most recognisable landmarks.
Why Godalming is lovely to colour
Godalming offers a wonderful mix of textures: timber frames, red brick, tile-hung cottages, church stone and riverside greenery. It's a town of detail rather than grand gestures, which makes it especially satisfying to colour slowly.
