Newark-on-Trent is one of those towns that rewards a slow wander. A castle on the riverbank, one of the finest market squares in England and centuries of history around every corner, all within a few minutes' walk.
The Newark-on-Trent colouring book from Britain in Lines invites you to take that wander one page at a time.
About Newark-on-Trent
Newark grew up where the Great North Road crossed the River Trent, which made it an important stop for travellers and traders for hundreds of years. King John died at Newark Castle in 1216, and during the English Civil War the town was a Royalist stronghold that held out through three sieges.
That history is still easy to see. The cobbled Market Place is framed by timber-framed inns and elegant Georgian buildings, and the town is now home to the National Civil War Centre, telling the story of those turbulent years.
Newark landmarks to colour
Newark Castle
The ruined castle stands proudly over the River Trent, its long riverside wall and gatehouse instantly recognisable to anyone arriving in town. It's a dramatic scene full of texture to colour.
The Town Hall
Overlooking the Market Place, Newark Town Hall is a fine Georgian building designed by the architect John Carr in the 18th century. Its columns and balanced proportions make a classic architectural page.
The Corn Exchange
A grand Victorian building with an ornate frontage, the Corn Exchange is a reminder of Newark's importance as a market and trading town.
Kelham Hall
Just outside the town, Kelham Hall is a striking Victorian Gothic mansion by George Gilbert Scott, full of towers, pointed windows and decorative brickwork.
The bridges over the Trent
Newark's riverside, with its bridges, locks and boats, gives the book some of its calmest, most open scenes.
Why Newark is perfect for colouring
Newark offers a little bit of everything: medieval ruins, Georgian elegance, Victorian grandeur and a gentle riverside. That variety keeps each page fresh, whether you want to spend an evening on a single building or move between scenes.
