Scarborough has a good claim to being Britain's first seaside resort. Visitors began arriving in the 17th century to take the spa waters, and they've never really stopped coming. Two sweeping bays, a castle on the headland and a harbour full of fishing boats make it one of the most recognisable towns on the Yorkshire coast.
The Scarborough colouring book from Britain in Lines brings all of that to the page, ready to be coloured at your own pace.
About Scarborough
Scarborough's story starts long before the seaside holiday. The headland between its North and South Bays has been fortified for millennia, and the medieval castle that sits there today has watched over the town for nearly 900 years.
The discovery of mineral springs turned Scarborough into a fashionable spa town, and the arrival of the railway in the 19th century opened it up to everyone. Grand hotels, gardens, cliff lifts and promenades followed, and many of those Victorian landmarks still define the town today.
Scarborough landmarks to colour
The Grand Hotel
Opened in 1867 and designed by Cuthbert Brodrick, the Grand Hotel was one of the largest hotels in the world when it was built. Its huge silhouette and domed corner towers dominate the South Bay, and they make a spectacular page to colour.
Scarborough Castle
High on the headland, the ruins of Scarborough Castle look out across both bays. Crumbling walls set against open sky give you plenty of room to experiment with stone and sky colours.
The Spa
Scarborough Spa, on the South Bay seafront, is a reminder of the springs that started it all. Its grand Victorian halls and terraces still host concerts and events today.
The harbour and lighthouse
Fishing boats, lobster pots, the harbour walls and the white lighthouse at the end of the pier. This is the working heart of Scarborough, and some of the most atmospheric scenes in the book.
Why Scarborough is perfect for colouring
Seaside towns are a gift for colourists. You get bold Victorian architecture, curving coastlines, boats, cliffs and big skies, all in one place. Try warm sandstone for the castle, soft blues for the bay, and as much colour as you like for the harbour boats.
