Stamford is regularly named one of the most beautiful towns in England, and it's easy to see why. Honey-coloured limestone streets, church spires, Georgian townhouses and a river winding through meadows make it feel like a town that time has been kind to.
The Stamford colouring book from Britain in Lines captures that elegance one page at a time.
About Stamford
Stamford grew rich in the Middle Ages on the wool and cloth trade, and its merchants filled the town with churches and fine buildings. Later, in the Georgian era, it became a busy coaching town on the Great North Road, and many of its handsome stone houses date from that time.
In 1967, Stamford became the first designated Conservation Area in England, which has helped protect its remarkable consistency of stone architecture. Its timeless streets have since made it a favourite with film and TV crews.
Stamford landmarks to colour
Burghley House
Just outside the town, Burghley House is one of England's grandest Elizabethan houses, built for William Cecil, Lord Burghley, chief adviser to Elizabeth I. Its roofline of towers, domes and chimneys is spectacular to colour.
Browne's Hospital
Founded in the 15th century by the wool merchant William Browne, Browne's Hospital is one of the finest medieval almshouses in England, and still provides homes for local people today.
St Martin's Church
On the south side of the river, St Martin's is home to the tomb of William Cecil and is a beautiful example of Stamford's many historic churches.
St George's Street
A quiet street of honey stone houses that captures the calm, timeless feel of Stamford.
The Town Hall
Standing near the bridge over the River Welland, the Georgian Town Hall is a fine example of the town's elegant civic architecture.
Why Stamford is perfect for colouring
Stamford's buildings share a beautiful harmony: matching stone, balanced windows and graceful proportions. That consistency is wonderful for colouring, letting you build up warm golds, soft creams and subtle shading, or experiment with something completely different.
